Feature Phones – taking over from smartphones in 2009?

Posted in Gadget by admin on August 31, 2010

Author: Matt Sharp

We’ve reached a point where feature phones are nearly as smart as smartphones, and in some key areas (like their cameras), they even BEAT smartphones. Let’s take a look at three of the best.

Samsung Jet

The Samsung Jet is all about one thing: speed. And to make it mind-bendingly quick, the Samsung Jet has a processor running at 800MHz, faster than just about any other phone currently on sale. Combine that with a beautiful 3D ‘Cubic’ interface, and the Samsung Jet becomes a true work of art, that’s both easy and rewarding to use. As for features, you get a 5MP camera, and lightning fast internet access, making the Samsung Jet the obvious choice if you want a non-smartphone that’s nearly as powerful as a true smartphone.

LG Viewty Smart

There’s a phone out there that fits the phrase ‘phone that’s nearly a smartphone, without actually being a smartphone’: the aptly named LG Viewty Smart. Following on from the original Viewty, the LG Viewty Smart follows the same design ethos of having a touchscreen only interface (the awesome S-Class interface), squeezed into a slim body, but it ups the ante with a superb 8MP camera. It also has HSDPA, making it a truly portable internet device. Put simply, the LG Viewty Smart is the smartest non-smartphone in the world, and it’s largely down to the interface. Built around a 3D cube, S-Class gives the LG Viewty a user-friendly and sleek interface, it is designed to be simple and intuitive.

Samsung Pixon 12

The Samsung Jet impresses with its fast processor, and the LG Viewty Smart is clearly an excellent camera phone. But what if there was a camera with an insanely powerful 12MP camera available? That’s exactly what you get with the Samsung Pixon 12. The Samsung Pixon 12 is also a truly beautiful mobile phone, and there’s no doubt it produces much better photos than any other phone out there. And then, of course, there’s that huge touchscreen, and that slick interface, making for one incredibly sexy and lovable mobile phone. At the end of the day, it’s going to come down to what you want from the phone, but if you want the best camera, the only choice is the Samsung Pixon 12.

Sony Ericsson MH907, control your cell phone with the ear

Posted in Gadget, Personal Computers, technology by admin on August 20, 2010

Sony Ericsson MH907

Although many hoped that Sony Ericsson today launched new handsets, accessories are the protagonists of their presentation. Well, specifically the fixture, and it was just a model of headphones, the Sony Ericsson MH907, which we’ve known.

What makes a mobile phone manufacturer introducing a headset? Obviously, these include a hands-free system for use with our terminal, but that is not its defining feature, but that are controlled by the ear.

Strange, huh? The idea is as simple as putting them in the ear that will serve to control some of its functions. If we put the two headphone playback starts instantly, stopping where we remove one of them. And the same idea applies to handsfree.

When we receive a call, if we put on a headset for making up the Sony Ericsson MH907 be automatically answer the call, take it from clinging to the ear. And the two things at once can also be made. If we receive a call while listening to music we remove and re-insert the headset to answer.

The Sony Ericsson MH907 are headphones in-ear type and use the manufacturer owns this port to connect to our phone, so it will not for other models. They will be available in two color combinations: white and yellow and chrome, and will be priced at 39 euros.

SPB Mobile Shell 3.5 – Why It’s The Best Phone Interface On The Market

Posted in Gadget by admin on July 20, 2010

Author: Matt Sharp

SPB Software are one of the best names in the third party mobile app business, and their flagship product is Mobile Shell, which has just been upgraded to Version 3.5. Let’s take a look and see whether it can beat three of its interface rivals.

SPB vs Toshiba TG01

It’s often said that Windows Mobile needs two things to run at its best: a powerful processor and a big display. Well, say hello to the Toshiba TG01, the phone with the fastest processor AND the biggest display in the history of phones! Weighing in at 1GHz and 4.1 inches respectively, those specs mean that the Toshiba TG01 will run Windows Mobile more smoothly than any other phone in existence; as well as that with that immense screen, the Toshiba TG01 makes drilling down into menus, and actually getting into the internals of Windows, so much easier. If power is your thing (and lets be honest, who doesn’t want a powerful phone?), then the Toshiba TG01 is the phone for you, but in terms of interface, the ’stripe’ interface the phone has cannot compete with the joys of SPB Mobile Shell, with its widget interface, which just leaves the standard interface on the TG01 in the dust.

SPB vs HTC Touch Diamond2

The HTC Touch Diamond2 actually does a very good job of making it so you don’t have to go into standard Windows menus that often, as on top of the operating system, the interface is HTC’s patented TouchFLO 3D setup, where everything is achieved through various finger swipes and sweeping gestures. It is truly intuitive, and it’s the reason why the HTC Touch Diamond2 is such an unmitigated joy to use. Of course, it’s not all about being pretty, a phone needs to have decent features and the HTC Touch Diamond2 has them in spades, from the 5 megapixel camera, through GPS, to incredibly fast HSDPA internet access (not to mention the superb Opera Mobile web browser). To many, the HTC Touch Diamond2 is the ultimate Windows Mobile phone, largely thanks to TouchFLO, but I find the SPB offering to be a far more user-friendly solution, and so, SPB Mobile Shell wins again.

SPB vs HTC Hero

Okay, so we’ve seen two Windows Mobile phones; first, there was the Toshiba TG01, and its stripe interface couldn’t compete with Mobile Shell. Then there was the HTC Touch Pro2, and although TouchFLO is good, again, SPB Mobile Shell won. So, now, let’s take a look at the most serious competition for SPB, and it’s the HTC Hero, which uses the Sense UI, running on top of Android. As SPB Mobile Shell is reminiscent of the Android interface, this isn’t an unfair comparison. It has all the good stuff that made the first Android phone (the G1) good, but puts it all in a touchscreen-only body, which is both sleek and sexy. Since the keyboard has been removed, the HTC Hero also has a full, onscreen keyboard, and a sumptuous new interface, the aforementioned Sense UI. This is again widget-based, and is really the only thing that can come close to the experience with SPB Mobile Shell. Mobile Shell is, though, faster, and runs more smoothly. So, what can we conclude? If you use a Windows Mobile phone, get Mobile Shell. It’s a must-buy. And if you use the HTC Hero, Sense UI will let you experience something similar to SPB Mobile Shell.
