Qualcomm’s FLO TV Gets a Handheld All Its Own

A society that is becoming more mobile yet more media-centric now has one more possible distraction to look forward to, thanks to a Wednesday announcement from FLO TV, the Qualcomm subsidiary specializing in live video you can take with you. The new FLO TV Personal Television sports a 3.5-inch diagonal screen and a touchscreen interface. Users can watch live news and sports, as well as some time-shifted programming. It will cost $249, plus a $8.99 monthly service fee.

Windows 7 Gets Rid of the Gimmicks

Is it damning with faint praise to say that Windows 7 is definitely not Windows Vista? Probably. After the misfire that was Microsoft’s previous operating system, those words alone may be enough to push consumers off the computer-buying fence — when you couple them with the bargain-basement deals that await PC shoppers over the next few weeks. However, it just so happens that after seeing demonstrations from Microsoft officials and getting a couple of days alone to play with the software, I’ve decided that Windows 7 is a better operating system than Vista.

VSS Enterprise to Take Adventurous and Affluent on Space Jaunts

You couldn’t find a more appropriate name for the world’s first commercial spaceship, which Virgin Galactic officially unveiled to the world and the media Monday night at California’s Mojave Air and Space Port. The SpaceShipTwo reusable suborbital plane is now the Virgin Space Ship Enterprise, and it represents a business undertaking worthy of a James T. Kirk-led mission: private spaceflight. “I think they were on track using that name,” Spaceflight Now reporter and former CNN contributor David Waters told TechNewsWorld.

Social Media, Politics and Much Ado About Tweeting

Those who cannot remember to report news on social media … are condemned to retweet it. Yeah, I know; somewhere in heaven, George Santayana is throwing his “World’s Greatest Philosopher” coffee cup at the wall, cursing yet another mangling of his famous saying about those who ignore history. But it seemed to fit, considering a famous TV reporter made news this week for tweeting a news tidbit that his employer felt he shouldn’t have, even though that same employer has probably been encouraging everyone working for it to jump on the Twitter express.
